Federal Bureau of Investigation

Background

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency. Operating under the DOJ and headquartered in Washington, D.C., it was established in 1908. In July 2016, the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation code-named Crossfire Hurricane into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian interference operations. That investigation was later subsumed by the Mueller Special Counsel inquiry. Director James Comey’s firing in May 2017 and subsequent FBI leadership decisions became central subjects of the obstruction of justice analysis in the Mueller Report.
