James Comey

Role
FBI Director (2013-2017); fired by Trump May 2017
Background
James Comey served as FBI Director from September 2013 until his firing by Donald Trump on May 9, 2017. He previously served as Deputy Attorney General under President George W. Bush. Comey oversaw both the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and the early stages of the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, code-named Crossfire Hurricane. In a May 2017 interview with NBC News anchor Lester Holt, Trump said he was thinking of “this Russia thing” when he decided to fire Comey, an admission that was used in the obstruction of justice analysis in the Mueller Report.
