Background
Aileen Cannon was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida by Trump in November 2020. She presided over the federal classified documents case against Trump. In July 2024, she dismissed the case on the grounds that Special CounselJack Smith had been unconstitutionally appointed, a ruling widely criticized by legal scholars. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals had previously reversed her rulings in the case on two separate occasions before the dismissal.
