Smirnov Fabricated FBI Intelligence
🟠 Erosion of Democratic Norms ·
2020, ongoing
Summary
FBI informant Alexander Smirnov told his FBI handler in June 2020 that Burisma executives told him they paid Joe and Hunter Biden $5 million each, fabricated claims that became a cornerstone of Republican impeachment efforts against President Biden. Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley publicly released the unverified FBI document in 2023 while Republicans had already voted to proceed with an impeachment inquiry. In February 2024, Special Counsel David Weiss indicted Smirnov for lying to the FBI; prosecutors found he had contacts with Russian intelligence who had helped ‘pass the story.’ Smirnov pleaded guilty in December 2024 and was sentenced to 6 years. The broader investigation into Hunter Biden found no additional charges. Hunter Biden was pardoned by his father in December 2024.
