pardon

An official act of governmental forgiveness that removes or nullifies the legal consequences of a criminal conviction. The U.S. president holds the constitutional power to pardon individuals for federal offenses. A full pardon wipes away penalties, restores civil rights, and cannot be appealed. It does not, however, expunge the underlying facts of the conduct or provide immunity from state prosecution.
