January 6 Capitol Attack
🟤 Election Tampering ·
Jan 6, 2021
Summary
Following months of election disinformation, failed court cases and laying the groundwork to steal the election via a Fraudulent Electors Scheme, Trump held a ‘Save America’ rally and directed the crowd toward the Capitol. Rioters stormed the building, halting the certification of Biden’s electoral victory. Despite both having the power and the obligation to call off the mob and mobilize the National Guard, Trump instead chose to pressure members of congress to halt certifying the election and made a statement that “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done”. Over 1,500 people were charged with federal crimes. Trump was impeached a second time 232-197, with 10 Republicans joining all Democrats, for ‘incitement of insurrection.’ The Senate voted 57-43 in favor of conviction, the most bipartisan presidential conviction vote in history, but fell short of the two-thirds threshold. Evidence showed Trump was told repeatedly to call off the attack but refused for hours. Trump subsequently pardoned all 1,500+ participants on his first day back in office.
