Role
National Security Advisor for 24 days in 2017; pleaded guilty to lying to FBI about Russia contacts, later pardoned
Background
Michael Thomas Flynn is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General who served as National Security Advisor for 24 days in 2017, the shortest tenure in the position’s history. He resigned after reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential transition, in which he discussed sanctions against Russia. Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to making false statements to the FBI, later sought to withdraw his plea, and was pardoned by Donald Trump in November 2020.
