Don McGahn

Role

White House Counsel (2017-2018); refused Trump’s order to fire Mueller

Background

Don McGahn served as White House Counsel from January 2017 to October 2018 and was a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission. According to the Mueller Report, McGahn refused Donald Trump’s order in June 2017 to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and later refused a separate order to prepare a document denying that the directive had been given. McGahn’s extensive cooperation with Mueller’s investigators made him one of the report’s most significant witnesses. In 2021, a federal court ordered him to testify before the House Judiciary Committee after years of executive privilege claims blocked his appearance.
