Jeff Sessions

Role
U.S. Attorney General (2017-2018); first senator to endorse Trump’s 2016 campaign
Background
Jeff Sessions served as a U.S. Senator from Alabama from 1997 to 2017 and was the first sitting U.S. Senator to endorse Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. As Attorney General from February 2017 to November 2018, Sessions oversaw the DOJ and its component agencies, including EOIR and the immigration courts. He recused himself from the Russia investigation in March 2017 after disclosing contacts with Russian officials, a decision Trump repeatedly criticized in public and private. Sessions directed toughened immigration enforcement policies, including a “zero tolerance” policy at the southern border, and oversaw EOIR’s 2017 restrictions on immigration judges’ speech. Trump fired Sessions in November 2018, one day after the midterm elections.
