Senate Intelligence Committee
Description
U.S. Senate Select Committee that oversees the U.S. intelligence community
Background
The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is a permanent U.S. Senate committee established in 1976 to provide oversight of the U.S. intelligence community. It conducted a bipartisan investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, releasing findings in five volumes between 2019 and 2020. Volume 5, focused on counterintelligence, assessed Konstantin Kilimnik to be a Russian intelligence officer and described Paul Manafort’s sharing of Trump campaign polling data with Kilimnik as a “grave” counterintelligence threat. The SSCI investigation was separate from and complementary to the Mueller Special Counsel investigation.
