Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Role

President of Ukraine (2019-present)

Background

Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected President of Ukraine in April 2019. He became the subject of Donald Trump’s July 25, 2019 phone call in which Trump asked him to announce investigations into Joe and Hunter Biden and into a discredited theory about Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election. A whistleblower complaint about the call triggered the first Trump impeachment. Zelenskyy has stated that he felt pressure on the call but was reluctant to be seen as interfering in U.S. domestic politics. After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Zelenskyy became a central figure in Western security policy.
