Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces; hacked DNC and DCCC servers in 2016
Background
The GRU is the foreign military intelligence agency of the Russian Armed Forces, operating under the authority of the Minister of Defence. Mueller’s July 2018 indictment of 12 GRU officers documented the agency’s role in hacking the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s email accounts in 2016. GRU Unit 26165, known as Fancy Bear, conducted the intrusion operations. GRU Unit 74455 assisted with the release of stolen materials. The stolen materials were released through the DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0 personas and passed to WikiLeaks for publication.
