quid pro quo

Latin for “something for something.” A conditional exchange in which one party agrees to do or provide something only in exchange for something from the other party. In U.S. law and politics, the term describes corrupt or improper bargains, such as conditioning official government action (like military aid) on a political favor from the recipient.
