Summary
The Trump DOJ moved to drop corruption charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who faced five counts including bribery and wire fraud, citing that the case ‘unduly restricted Adams’ ability to cooperate with Trump’s immigration enforcement priorities.’ Acting U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon resigned rather than carry out the order, writing that Adams’ lawyers had ‘urged what amounted to a quid pro quo’, dismissal of the indictment in exchange for Adams’ support of Trump immigration enforcement. Seven additional federal prosecutors resigned in protest. Judge Dale Ho, dismissing the case ‘with prejudice’ (permanently barring refiling), wrote: ‘Everything here smacks of a bargain: dismissal of the indictment in exchange for immigration policy concessions.’ Both Adams and DOJ denied a quid pro quo.
