emoluments
An emolument is any payment, profit, or benefit received from employment or from the holding of office. The U.S. Constitution contains two Emoluments Clauses: the Foreign Emoluments Clause (Article I, Section 9) prohibits federal officeholders from accepting gifts, payments, or titles from foreign governments without congressional consent; the Domestic Emoluments Clause (Article II, Section 1) prohibits the president from receiving any compensation beyond the official salary from federal or state governments. The clauses were intended to prevent corruption and ensure that the president’s loyalties are not divided by financial entanglements with foreign or domestic powers.
