An informal term for a payment made to a person in exchange for their agreement to remain silent about information that could embarrass or damage the payer. Such payments may violate campaign finance laws when made in connection with a federal election without proper disclosure, and can form the basis of fraud charges when disguised in business records as a different type of expense.
