commutation

The reduction of a criminal sentence to a lesser punishment, typically by executive order of the president or a governor. Unlike a pardon, a commutation does not erase the conviction itself; it only reduces or eliminates the remaining penalty. A president may commute a sentence before a defendant has served any prison time, effectively preventing incarceration.
