Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court (1993-2020); her death created the vacancy Republicans rushed to fill with Amy Coney Barrett
Background
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (March 15, 1933, to September 18, 2020) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1993 until her death in 2020. Nominated by President Bill Clinton to succeed Justice Byron White. Ginsburg died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer on September 18, 2020, 46 days before the 2020 presidential election. Her death created the vacancy that Senate Republicans rushed to fill before Election Day: Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett, whom the Senate confirmed 52-48 on October 26, 2020.
