Federal Emergency Management Agency

Description

Federal Emergency Management Agency; agency within DHS that coordinates federal disaster response and recovery funding

Background

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of DHS, coordinates the federal government’s preparation for and response to disasters and administers recovery funding to states and localities. A federal judge found that the Trump administration violated a court order by using a covert review process to withhold FEMA funds from states with sanctuary immigration policies. In 2025, the administration approved disaster declarations for several Republican-led states while denying them to Democratic-led states facing comparable circumstances.
