Firing of Inspectors General

Summary
Just four days into his second term, Donald Trump fired 17 independent federal inspectors general, the government’s primary watchdogs, in apparent violation of federal law requiring 30 days’ advance notice to Congress with specific reasons given for each removal. Congress received no such notice or substantive justification. Legal experts across the political spectrum described the action as illegal and characterized it as a coordinated attempt to eliminate independent oversight of executive branch agencies before significant policy and personnel changes. The fired officials directed oversight functions at the Departments of Defense, State, Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and other major agencies. Trump replaced several of the fired IGs with political loyalists.
